The Importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Written from the perspective of a college student and preschool special education teacher

Introduction

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a foundational component of healthy development that influences how children understand themselves, manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. As a preschool special education teacher, I see daily how early social and emotional skills impact children’s ability to learn, communicate, and engage with peers. By staying informed and using evidence-based practices, educators can intentionally support SEL in the classroom while also empowering families to extend these practices at home.

This website is designed to educate fellow educators on the importance of SEL across developmental stages, highlight key milestones, and provide practical strategies that support children from early development through later growth.
